Roundworms

Roundworms (Toxocara canis) are microscopic round-shaped parasites, that can be up to 7 inches long.

Dog gets contaminated by the ingestion of earthworms, birds, roaches, or infected feces. Symptoms of contamination are an inflated belly, diarrhea, and in puppies, slower growth.

Contamination from dog to human occurs after gardening or playtime in the sandbox. In the areas where the dog has defecated.  Symptoms of contamination in people include fever, weight loss, and respiratory problems. Lungs, liver, and brain can be damaged also.

It is necessary to carefully wash your hands and nails to decrease your chances to get sick.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms (Dipylidium caninum) are flat intestinal worms up to 8 inches long.  They will appear like small grains of rice when a dog defecates.

Dogs are contaminated by tapeworms after ingesting an infected flea or another dog’s feces. 

A dog owner can be contaminated in the same way, usually, small children are affected.

The sign of contamination can be persistently scooting a bottom across the floor. To prevent contamination, use dog flea control products.

Ringworm

Ringworm is a parasitic fungus that can cause hair loss in the infected areas. The illness looks like raised, circular, crusted areas on the skin. You or your dog become infected by touching contaminated objects, infected animals, or humans.

In most cases, ringworm can be cured with topical or antifungal medication. Careful cleaning of all frequently used areas in your house is also necessary.

Roundworms ?Inflated belly, diarrhea, slower growth in puppies, fever, weight loss, respiratory problems, damage to lungs, liver, and brain. Wash hands and nails carefully to decrease the chances of getting sick.?

To get rid of mites at home you should disinfect the dog’s bedding. Your vet will prescribe injections or oral medicine together with medicated dips and baths.

Lyme disease

Lyme disease is a blacklegged or deer tick spreads the infection which is dangerous for dogs and people. In dogs, the infection takes about 18 hours after the tick bite. But you may not notice it for months until your dog will show signs of joint inflammation. The consequences are depression, loss of appetite, and kidney damage.

For people, Lyme disease spreads after 36-48 hours of tick attachment. Bulls-eye rash may occur but you may not see
symptoms for a while. There is a vaccine for dogs but not for people. To avoid infection regularly check your dog’s hair and yourself for ticks. Protect your dog with anti-tick topicals and keep carpets well-vacuumed.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis,  which is a bacterial disease. It causes damage to liver, kidneys, rarely death. You can protect your dog by vaccination, especially if you live in wet places or in Hawaii. A person can become infected from dog through urine,  for example, in a pool.

Salmonellosis

Salmonellosis causes GI upset in humans and dogs, in some cases even death. Not sterilized or heat-processed raw diets can contain Salmonella bacteria together with Campylobacter and E Coli. Keep kids away from the place where dog eats food to avoid contamination.
